Pixel Junk Eden

3 June 2008 at 6:02 pm (Games)

Watching WIRED’s Game|Life podcast (Episode 16) I discovered the new Pixel Junk (that is in fact a set of games produced by Q-Games) game : Eden.

As far as I could understand, Eden is a game where you are a kind of minimalist creature with some kind of ninja rope power (quoting one of the Worms accessories). Using this power you have to move around the world in order to polonaise plants and make theme grow, in other words you make a garden.

Since I don’t have a Plastation3 (donations are welcome), I don’t know quite well if the game got released. I just know that it will be a downloadable game.

What I like watching the video of the game are the graphics, the fluidity and the organic impression, but also the fact that the gameplay seems to be simple.

Here is the trailer video :

Gamerz 2.0

4 February 2008 at 9:13 pm (Circuit Bending Workshop, Exhibition, Games, Hypermedia, Mechatronics, Processing.org, Sound)

I didn’t had time to write about the Gamerz 2.0 exhibition, so here I am trying to fix this…

First, Antonin Fournaud and Manuel Braun’s Patch&KO, a mod of Street Fight II introducing a control device where you must loose control to be able to play. The device is basically an hybrid between a bean game, a Pachniko and a marble machine using iron balls in a pin field making electric contacts. Each contact may be transformed in an action (like hit, jump, etc.). Here is a video showing it in action:

Servovalve presented a “worm” version of Carbone: a software that copies an image (a face to be precise) in a random mode.

Damien Aspe built a real and colorful Tetris wall called From Russia with fun:

Guillaume Stagnaro presented a piece called XOX, two robots playing Tic-tac-toe programmed to never loose and never win. In this situation, the only way to win is not to play.

Grégoire Lauvin presented Weith Contest, a multiplayer music game where the gameplay is based on weight. The heaviest measure plays the sample.

Pierrick Thébault (from L16) made a cool hack from CyWorld making a porn version called CyPorn.

The night finished with a live musical performance by Confipop and Sidabitball using Game Boys as instrument to generate sounds and images.

More information about the works presented here and the ones I didn’t mention here.

Bio feedback anti-stress game

9 January 2008 at 10:06 am (First ones, Games, Hybrid Workshop, Links, Un-Usual Post)

I’ve just seen at the French news a biofeedback anti-stress PC game made by SymBioFi. The game idea is quite simple: you stick some cardiac and breath sensors on specific parts of your body and plug theme into your computer: this is your control. But how can you play with this stuff on you? “Easy”: all you need to do is to control your breath and cardiac rhythms. In other words, you need to control your stress level… The less stressed you are the more points you get…

Besides the Zen attitude, Jedi training and therapeutic proprieties of this game, the control system seems very interesting to me. It could be used to develop games where self control is a part of the plot. For instance, in a war strategy game, if you get too stressed your leadership level decreases.

This device can although be used in some kind of interactive installation where your stress level change proprieties of the installation itself…

Since we are working with Laboratory of fictions theme in the Hybrid Workshop, this device could be part of a future project. Therefore, it deserves to be presented and to have a more serious reflexion on it.

Now that I am thinking, we could use it in sound applications too…

More reflexions coming up…
